The Importance of Knowing Your Learners. Ok, so you may know the content that needs to be taught, and you may know the effort it takes in order to put it together, but do you know your audience and the learners that will be taking the training?
Our #1 rule is to first know your audience.
What do they know if anything already about the content? Ensure you cover all bases in the training; from those that don’t know anything about the content to those that know a lot about the new process.
Make sure your material is conducive to all types of learning styles. If you cover all these learning styles from the Niel Fleming’s VAK/VARK mode, you are well on your way:
visual learners
auditory learners
reading-writing preference learners
kinesthetic learners or tactile learners.
What job duties does your audience have? Make sure to speak to all areas. And for the majority of the learners who’s jobs are similar, use examples from their duties in your training.
By knowing your audience well, you will be able to keep them better engaged (especially if the material is considered dry and mundane). And the more the learners are engaged, the better they will have a successful learning experience and put what they just learned into their day-to-day duties.
